Friends,
I've gotta be the luckiest man in the world. Because in my 29 years of living, I have known angels. Flesh and blood Angels whose hearts beat one more breath of love into the world with each passing moment.
The first time I met Kathleen Hartmann was on the musty wards of the Good Shepherd hospital about 5 years ago. I always say that in that brief moment, I knew without a doubt, that I was in the presence of a great and wonderful soul.
It was as if a certain rare and beautiful fragrance tiptoed into the room and settled around her.
In all my dealings with Kathleen since, I have found that first instinct to be one hundred percent accurate.
There are some people whose hearts are so wide, whose lives are so filled with humility, and grace that to begin to write about them is almost impossible. This is how I feel about Kathleen Hartmann.
I was blessed to be roommates with Kathleen for part of this year in our beloved Siteki. She had called me to come and help empower the home based care team in their difficult but crucial work of tending to the sickest and poorest within Swaziland. But as I went out each day with the team, It was I who found myself learning.
Kathleen is a master of compassion. A virtuoso of love.
Whether it be on a hospital ward or in the corner of a delapidated hut into which the light has never shone, that love is always, always apparent.
The video below is one which we took the night before Kathleen left for her home in New York this year.
Over the last ten or so years that Kathleen has been doing this work, there is a group of boys in the community that have become like her own children.
There is Spa (Spamandla) who dreams of becoming a doctor, Mtho (Mthobisi) who is a double orphan and has moved in with Spa because he was unable to study in his hut as he could no longer afford candles. There is Thando whose heart is so big and is our tour guide whereever we go. Melegelily who loves to eat! And then there is Tobs (Thobani).
Thobani is Kathleens soulmate and our beloved brother.
Thobani was born with spina bifida, his legs paralysed. At a young age he would walk on his hands through his mud hut, dragging his feet, which meant they would become chronically infected. Eventually both his legs were amputated.
His life has been so very difficult. There are trials and tribulations which he has faced which are deeper and broader than I can write about in this small space.
But through it all Thobani's heart has remained pure. His love for the world unadulterated, uncorrupted.
At every juncture of his difficult life, Kathleen Hartmann has been Thobani's angel.
Theirs is an uncommon love story which inspires all of us who have been blessed to know them both.
The night before she left, the boys came to me and said "Yo, Maithri - can you teach us a song that we can all sing for Kathleen."
"An English song?" I said - my eyes lighting up ;).
"Oh yes!" they replied in unison.
So for two hours we crammed into the back of my little hired volkswagen and learnt this song.
Roomie, I know you've been asking me to send this song to you, so here it is....
God bless you Kathleen,
We love you.
You are the change I want to see in this world,
Maithri.

Beautiful. This song has wonderful meaning for me from past associations. You and Kathleen are both flesh nd blood angels in my opinion.
A moving story. I was so happy to hear you sing again, Maithri. I do adore your singing. You and your friend singing made my heart feel lighter.
I try and try to find words to comment, that are fitting to express how I feel, but I fall short every time... Thank you for sharing your beautiful gifts, Maithri :)
Your beautiful writing and the love that sounds from every word, uplifts me in so many ways, and inspires me to reach for love in every way, perhaps most especially when I least feel it.
Your generosity is where the saying "love makes the world go round" comes from.
You contribute to us spinning in the right direction.
thank you for all that you share.

Maithri,
I LOVE that song. For some reason YouTube is not loading tonight, but I am sure that you gave it wings. Your talent is as your love.
I have to come back and hear it.
Much love!
Dear Maithri,
I am so moved by the love pouring through your angelic voice. What a precious gift you gave to these young men, and Kathleen.
Thank you for sharing such beauty my friend!
Beautiful. The only word that I can think of though it barely begins to describe this video, this song, this friendship, this angel, the work you do.
You, lift me up. I hope I am able to pay it forward in my own part of the world.
God bless you and your angels.
And you raise us all up.
With tears of love and gratitude,
Rebecca
Dearest man,
What a glorious tribute to Kathleen. What a loving gift from the boys.
Thank you for lifting us all up with this post. It is proof that the Love just goes on and on ad infinitum!
Love and Peace...L
Can I ask a dumb question...
Why arent you a full time singer?
It seems so completely effortless for you.
Maithri,
You are the change I want to see in this world, bless you!!
You have the voice of an angel.
Love and hugs.
I have just come form Brian of Waystation One where I was saying I was not sure that acts of compassion are necessarily inspired by the Divine.
Now I am moved to tears...
Oh my! i'm imagining you and the boys standing on a hill with the mountains of Swaziland enveloping you with love...the wind softly blowing through the tall green grasslands...all of you sing and your voice, together with the beautiful young voices, reach far and high...and hope does not just become a whisper, it becomes a song!
My friend...i know!
Africa!
Yes!
Afrika is sooo lief vir jou! (Africa loves you soooo much! ) said in Afrikaans...
Big hug xx

M,
Your tribute to this special angel has blessed me. Thank you for all the light you bring into my life and the lives of others.
You really could quit your day job. ;-)

Maithri you are good and beautiful. You are everything that is good and beautiful.
What a gift. You are so full of love Maithri and you are a gift to the world.
Love Renee oxooxo
oh Maithri. Maithri. You make me feel that I really can reach up and touch those stars in the vast night skies of Africa. Yes, it's true...you are my hero. You have helped all of us reach up and touch the stars. Thank you for allowing us to do that. Thank you for being you.
And Kathleen - thank you as well, from the very heart of me. You are indeed an angel.
Isn't amazing how angels are in our lives just at the right moments? It seems we never forget their love or the beautiful light, they shine.
: )
It was joyful to hear you unite in this beautiful song. It was a proof that angels do exist.
One love, one world
Oh, Maithri. I haven't been around because I need to take time. To spend time here with you and really talk to you when I write. You know? A two minute comment is not enough. Not nearly enough. You make my heart - well, feel. Feel more. So, I need to take time here. But. School starts soon and I am in the middle of home visits for all my new students. I love it, but it doesn't leave me much free time. I couldn't be silent any longer. I had to stop by to say hello and that I am thinking of you. I will be back here and on email as soon as I can. Thinking of you, my friend.
Bautifully sung! For the rest: what Brian R said!
Maithri, thank you for sharing compassionate and understated Kathleen with us. Your warmth just spills out in this song.
I was especially delighted to hear the 'guys' sing. They felt the honoring implicit in these song lyrics. It was adorable.
And your voice is such a treasure...I love it when you share yourself in this way. It shows your loving and potently heartfelt spirit. <3
maistro

Oh. My. Goodness. There is nothing about you that is not beautiful. To see those lovely young men thriving lifts me up. It crushes me to ponder on what their fate would have been without you and Kathleen. To think that this world could have lost such beautiful souls. All my love, Deborah
And now I'll head to bed with a happy heart and more than one tear in my eye. Good night, sweet friend.
What a beautiful rendition.
