We live bordered lives. Boundaries are everywhere. Created by the world in which we live, our local communities, our families, our minds.
There is certainly some safety to be found within these borders. They keep us within the realm of 'the known', 'the familiar', 'the understood'.
But whilst boundaries can keep us safe, they also keep us imprisoned.
Whats more, they all too often become the playgrounds of fear.
Almost every page of human history is stained by the blood of innocents which has been spilled because of xenophobia - the fear of difference.
All you have to do is turn on the television, or open your newspaper and you will be confronted by the words of people whose lives are invested in maintaining and perpetuating boundaries.
Boundaries between black and white, men and women, gay and straight, rich and poor, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, Atheist etc etc.
It seems 'Fear speech' and 'Hate speech' is everywhere.... And even when we talk about 'tolerance', there is often an air of superiority, or condescension, in the way we speak. We can imagine 'tolerating' difference, but not celebrating it.
I am reminded that it is 'Holy week.' The time when Christians reflect upon the passion of Jesus....
The great and beloved mystic who was nailed to a tree, because of his radical thoughts on love and peace.
And I cant help thinking of all the 'Christians' who have and continue to speak hatred and fear in 'His name'.
Why do we so consistently, and with such arrogance, use the name of love in vain...to spread fear and hatred...instead of peace
Earlier this year I wrote these words on the subject:
"I believe in love.
And we do a disservice to love when we exclude any one from its circle. When we classify anyone as 'less than' or 'better than', for any reason.
I believe that we as a global community need to create a poetics of inclusion.
A vision of fearless equality and extravagant love.
Walls separate. Love connects."
The following video is one of the most profoundly moving statements on the need to open our minds and hearts to all people, that i have ever had the priveledge of seeing...It was sent to me by a dear friend who is director of http://www.curiousworks.com.au/ . The video is in two parts... The first is an artistic/creative piece by an amazing woman with autism, The second part is the powerful and eloquent translation of the piece in her own words....
At this Easter time I would like to offer the words of Jesus as you may not have heard them before... they are directly translated from the original Aramaic by the great Aramaic Scholar, Neil Douglas Klotz (author of Prayers of the Cosmos - Meditations on the Aramaic words of Jesus)...
Matthew 22:35-39 (King James version)
"Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, Master which is the greatest commandment in the Law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself."
The text as it is written in Aramaic:
Jesus said:
"Detrahm l'marya Alahak
men kuleh lebak
wa men kuleh napshak
wa men kuleh haylak
wa men kuleh rewhyanak...
Detrahm laqriybak ayk naphshak"
Translated directly from the Aramaic
Jesus said:
From the deepest part of yourself,
let love be born for the rays of the One that shine around you...
Let this come from your whole heart-the center of your life:
your passion, courage, and audacity-
and touch your whole subconscious self-
that instinctive soul within which scatters and gathers.
From this self liberate your whole animal energy and life force
to flood your entire grasping mind with love.
This is the most important command - the first creative movement that empowers all others.
The second is like it: Draw a breath of compassion for the one mysteriously drawn to live near you: love that friend as you love the self that dwells within - the subconscious that sometimes feels separate and intruding.
Let us continue to loosen the ties that bind us. To realise that boundaries are merely constructs of the 'grasping mind'.
Let us breathe love into the spaces between our lips...
And learn how to celebrate one another... To walk together upon this human path.
Take my hand, Maithri.

42 Whispers of Hope:
So well stated! We do need to get beyond boundaries, especially ideological ones.
Peace! :)
here's my hand....
Oh, I could write a zillion words in my language, but I only want to write one....in a lanuage understood, accepted....
take my hand.....
and I'll take hers
and she'll take his
and hers and he'll take theirs
and they'll take ours....
May the circle be unbroken....

The Universal Language.....
What a true post. This comes to me at a time when I am studieng this exactconcept in school. We are learning about the Holocaust and prejudice and how it distroies us and our relation to others. Talk to you later.
Bye,
Suzanne:]
Dear Thailand chani,
Thank you for your kind words. You're so right in what you say.
Often boundaries of ideology are so deep that the mere mention of 'another way' makes us cringe, or close our minds...
We are uncomfortable with insecurity... With the possibility that our way to truth... is not the only way...
Love without condition is easy to talk about, but so much more difficult to practice... because it requires real strength...
Sending you love and peace this day,
M
Dear Singleton,
Your comment says it all, so eloquently, with such grace....
Those are the three universal words...
The language of peace.
Its so simple...
Just take my hand.
The rest will come,
Love to you, M
Dear Dr. Suzanne,
Its so important to learn about the the effects of prejudice...
There is a post on my sidebar called 'I choose peace' - In it you'll find a video by high school students about genocide and the holocaust thats happening in Darfur... Its an amazing video. Check it out when you get a chance.
The world is always calling us to open up our minds... and our hearts...
to see and feel the commonalities between ourselves and others...
This is the way to peace,
Sending you a wonderful day,
M
maithri,
thanks for this post. i'm particularly interested in the scripture translated from Aramaic...it's so much more powerful. i sometimes wonder just how much we have missed out on due to poor translating. thankfully as our knowledge grows we can see more and more of the power of original texts.
Shalom

Beloved Brother Maithri,
Your writings and thoughts are a balm to the raging fires of Hate,Indifference and religious intolerance so widely spreading among Humanity..and we all need to shift our focus from "I" to "Us" and be inclusive of unconditional love towards all His children and not exclusive.
I humbly and deeply respect and bow down to your spirit of Oneness and the Creation of a boundary free world where we all speak only One language - The language of Love :))
Even our Beloved Prophet Jesus who died for us only wanted to imbibe the seed of Love, compassion and peace among humanity.
May The Son of God bless you and your tender soul with His Light and grant you-His Angel all the Happiness you so richly deserve :))
A tight hug and lots of love for you brother:)
Keep Shining!
"... we do a disservice to love when we exclude any one from its circle" - what an amazing thought!
I have printed this one line and posted it on my soft board.
Thank you for all your love!
A most beautiful and completely true post, dear Brother Maithri :)
Indeed, love is the foundation of the Way to God, and the all the states and stations of the Sufi path are nothing more than deepening love, expressed in service to all of creation.
I kiss your hand, dear Brother, and take it in mine.
Peace and Many, Many Blessings!
Yes, I join hands with you and will practice love by extending my boundaries out to help open my mind. I will need another reminder tomorrow. I have been reading the Word for over 22 years but the imprisonment you talk about has invisible bars and can only be revealed by continued Truth coming at me many ways.
Maithri thanks for being one of those ways. You have opened my mind today and the bars are seen a little more clearly.
With Love
Dear Maithri, this post is so beautiful, it makes me gasp. Thank you for writing of things that matter so very, very much. Take Care, Peace be yours Jen B. xxx
There is a BIG difference between tolerance and celebrating one another isn't there? I wish the message was one of a bit more love & celebration of the beauty of our diverse world...and not merely "tolerating". Tolerating does not evoke curiousity about what has meaning to those different from our own culture.
Beautifully written, as always. Miigwetch! (thank you)
Thank you for stopping by my page. I fear I am only a camp follower and not a true warrior. I do so little other than raise my voice in a few occasional words.
YOU post moves me more than I have words to tell you. Thanks. I shall read your earlier posts and you are going onto my sidebar .
O.
This past year has been a lot of taking down personal inner borders that had held me back, caged me in, and the freedom beyond then is exhilarating and makes me heart ache with the beauty of it all.
This passage spoke to me. thank-you for sharing this translation.
I am honored to be in this world with you, loving the world to change, moving beyond borders that separate us, making us believe we are not really one.
lovely one Maithri!
What a wonderful reminder.
I call myself a lousy Christian.
I gave up the church, but never the teachings. Those who claim to be Christian and spread hatred and violence don't resonate well with me.
I love Jesus, the teachings, the whole thing. Just not the misunderstanding that we are different in any way.
WE are all inside looking out.

Gillian a.k.a. Bluetastic one!!! LOL
Maithri,
The love in your words are emblazoned on my heart. You are a skywriter who writes love across the universe.
Bless you.
Thats my favourite post to date, you're a beautiful writer big brother!!
I'm a little biased, but you are!
Love,T
I try every day
It is not what we say
But how we say it.
It is not what we do
But how we do it.
Pity ignorance and prejudice
Don't fear it.
Sometimes speaking the same language is a handicap,
we often gain by so much by
communicating
with actions instead of words.
A touch, a smile, a helping hand
transcend language and race, and beliefs and disabilities, and bring people together.
It works for me.
You write such beautiful and wise words. True, we are often trapped by self imposed boudaries and labels. We resist the love of each other for some very strange reasons, and as you pointed out, the reason is usually beacause we view each other as different.
I love the interpetation of tbe passages from the Bible which you provided. The words are so very beautiful and touch my soul. Thank-you for being a ray of light. Thank-you for living and leading by example. You are love and you are loved my friend.
the bane of the human mind is when we fail to understand and that which we do not understand often makes us uncomfortable.
i thought the video brilliant in its message. this courageous and eloquent woman gave us a glimpse into her world and the intellect that resides within and gave us the opportunity to understand those that reside in her world...she found the venue to speak for herself and for all like her and communicate to us that they too have a language....it is just that we fail, in our limited vision, to understand it.
thank you for this maithri. you always write such inspirational and thought-provoking posts.....a light onto a sometimes dark world.
love and blessings,
rebecca
Dear Kylie,
Thanks for stopping by and for your kind words.
I love the new translations from the original Aramaic which Jesus spoke... I completely agree with you...
'Prayers of the Cosmos' is one of my favourite books... the new version of the lords prayer is mind blowing ;)
Sending you love this day,
M
Dearest Sister Krishna,
Your tender words of love fill my heart with such grace.
Thank you so much for all the light you bring to the world.
You are a true angel. A messsenger of peace to the world.
We need to break down the walls that separate human beings and learn how similar we all really are..
Holding you in the light my dear sister,
M
Dear Sister Suroor,
You humble me with your kind words.
Love's circle is infinite.... invincible...unending...
Who are we to exclude anyone from its embrace?
We are loved equally. No better thans. No less thans.
Sending you my deepest love and blessings of peace to you and your beloveds,
M
Dear Brother Irving,
I am so interested in the Sufi path... Every time I come to your blog I learn something new... some treasure of love to take with me on my path...
You my brother are not only a Darvish of the Sufi Religion, you are priest for all humanity... a beacon light of hope in the darkness...
I humbly bow to your wisdom and the light of your presence.
Thank you for walking this road with me,
My love to you and yours, Maithri
Dear Marcia,
You are wonderful my sister.
"I will need another reminder tomorrow".... Is this not the truth for us all...
We just need reminders... each day...to bring us back into balance.. to recenter ourselves...
to remind ourselves that love is our reason for being. Boundless, unconditional, love.
Sending you deep peace and all the joys of the winged life,
Maithri
Dear Jen,
I love your tender presence in this world. I feel such warmth and grace when I read your words...
Thank you for being here.
Sending light, soft healing and invincible hope,
Maithri
Dear Peace is everystep,
I totally agree with you my dear friend,
There is a world of difference between tolerating someone and celebrating them...
Sometimes it seems that we should tolerate difference the way we would an unruly child... just accept it and move along...
But if we celebrate diversity... if we break through our prisons of fear... then think of the richness we will gain from one another...
Sending you deep peace and Big love,
M
Dear Onedia,
I am so glad to meet you. Your blog is an inspiration.
You are a peacewarrior.
Thank you for being here and for all that you do for the world.
Sending you the love that changes things,
M
Dearest Bella,
The honour is all mine... What a joy to know your dancing spirit.. The tenderness with which you touch others... and the courage with which you face each day.

Dear Swahilyia,
Thank you so much my friend,
Sending you soft light this day,
M
Dear Gill (the Bluetastic one ;),
You are so right...
I would rather be Christlike than call myself 'Christian'.
We get so bogged down in names and labels... that we forget what the labels represent...
Cows are different colours but milk is white.
So it is, that truth is universal, but the gift wrap differs according to where you live and what you've been taught.
Sending you laughter, love and soft light my friend,
Maithri
Dear Alexys,
Your words give me wings.
Thank you for burning so brilliantly through the night...
You light the world.
Sending you love and deep peace,
M
Dear ((((((T)))))),
I love you so much.
There is no one in this whole world more beautiful than you.
And there is no brother luckier than me, to know your laughter, your warmth and your grace.
Gods choicest blessings and all my love,
M
Dear Sandy,
Thank you so much for these words.
This is all that is ever asked of us...
To try to break down the walls each day... with love.
Sending light, peace and hope,
M
Dear Sheila,
Your words are sweet music to my ears..
I love everything you've said here..
Thank you for the powerful, gentle beauty of your spirit.
I am blessed to know you and call you my friend,
Love to you and the family, M
Dear Brother Mark,
Thank you so much for the gift of your words.
You are a shining light. An example of what is possible for a human being to achieve by just giving love...
Thank you my brother for all that you are,
Sending you love and light today and always,
M
Dear Rebecca,
I love reading your thoughtful and insightful comments.
Thank you so very much for sharing these thoughts with me.
I completely agree. The video just blew me away.
Especially the second part... her message to the world... to wake up and remember that we are all here together... that we are equal... that we all have a song to sing...
Sending you my love and the tender blessings of light to you and yours,
M
